Many people have brittle or thin nails due to just having thin and delicate nails, or having damaged their nails over time. These 10 ways will help increase the strength of your nails so that you can be one step closer to achieving strong, thick, and healthy nails.
1. Avoid using alcohol based hand sanitizer and acetone based nail polish remover. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer can be drying for the nails so it is better to avoid it. And the acetone in the nail polish remover is damaging as well.
2. Use cuticle oil to hydrate the nail enamel and moisturize your hands as another way to hydrate your nails several times a week.
3. Bypass buffing nails, since buffing is used to even out the thickest part of the nail, which many people don't know is the healthy part of the nail and by buffing it down, the nail is thinned down.
4. Trim nails, since when the nails grow out, it becomes thinner and weaker causing breakage.
5. Apply a nail hardener. Many brands such as Sally Hansen have a polish that includes vitamins that help strengthen the nail.
6. Limit chemical exposure. When cleaning, or using chemical substances, try wearing gloves or protecting your nails.
7. Leave your cuticles alone. The cuticles seal and protect the nail bed, so unless they are cut by a professional manicurist, it is best to leave them alone. Although, if they are in a really bad condition, then it could be better to moisturize them instead.
8. Soaking nails. You can make a DIY nail soak, by a combination of oils such as coconut, argan, and olive. By soaking your nails in the moisture, the nail bed will receive its daily amount of moisture and vitamins.
9. Avoid using your nails as tools when opening, scraping, or peeling things since that produces stress on the tip of the nail making it more weak and brittle.
10. Not have them painted or done all of the time. Since any sort of polish or anything on them other than a strengthening polish, causes the nail to become more dried out, so its best to leave them natural for a while, since a break is always good for the nail to revive itself to a healthier state.
